Business Power Network
Issue No. 7 March 2010
How Does BPN Help Thee?

Let us count the ways!  Well, in addition to all of the many ways that BNI can help you grow your business -- and if you don't know what those are, you need to attend a meeting and find out! -- our chapter steps outside the "meeting box" to find additional ways we can promote our members' businesses and give them an edge over their competitors.  A few examples:
  • This Newsletter:  We feature one member per issue, not to mention insightful articles, upcoming events, and chapter news.
  • Facebook:  Keep up with the latest happenings, read member testimonials, event photos, featured members, and more!
  • LinkedIn:  We've recreated BNI's environment online, so members' "spheres of influence" are given actual names and faces.
  • Chapter Website:  The best of its kind in southwest Missouri (probably in the whole region), and a great chapter resource.
These are just some of the ways we give back to our members, and we're constantly on the lookout for more.  Don't you think your business could use some additional help, particularly in these economic times where every dollar counts?  If you'd like to learn more, come join us for an afternoon -- you're going to eat lunch anyway, might as well  earn some new business at the same time!
You Get What You Give!

Chris Maples-Shuler, Maples Properties
I like this thought: You get what you give.  It can apply to so many things and attitudes.  From an athlete who works especially hard to excel at his sport, then reaps the rewards, to the BNI member who continually refers his fellow members, attends all meetings and consequently grows his business greatly by this participation.   We can go on and on about the benefits we receive from being a strong and involved chapter, but we must also remember that giving back to the chapter is just as important.

The book The Truth About Selling discusses the mind set of selling, stating: "The biggest inversion of all, the great upside-down misconception about sales, is that it's an effort to get something from others.  The truth is that sales at its best -- that is, at its most effective -- is precisely the opposite: it is about giving."  BNI can also be thought of as about giving: giving time, attention, counsel, education, empathy, and value.  The word "sell" comes from the Old English word sellan, which means -- you guessed it -- "to give".  Perhaps you already think of selling and BNI in a lot of the same ways.  BNI gives us the opportunity of educating our members/friends about our business and what we can give, as well as about what we need to grow our business.

I personally think we have an outstanding group of givers in our chapter.  Of course, I am quite partial on this subject!  All it takes, though, is looking at our numbers and past achievement as a chapter to illustrate our ability to "give".  And not only to give, but to work for our chapter.  All of you participate, with great heart, give when asked to, and lead when called upon.  What more could a person ask from a chapter?  Here is another quote:  "Shifting your focus from getting to giving is not only a nice way to live life and conduct business, but a very profitable way as well."  Put another way: living with generosity creates a swelling tide that raises all ships.  Not just yours, not just another person's, but everyone's!

Let's all move forward with the attitude of giving and the endless opportunity it provides us!

As we all know, the philosophy of BNI is Givers Gain:  Give business to others in order to receive business yourself. This idea can be used in terms of your chapter as well. How can you help your chapter? What can you give to make your chapter more successful?

Give your time.
Attend all meetings, training, chapter functions, volunteer for a position in your chapter. Building strong relationships with your fellow members is key and makes your chapter stronger. Helping out by taking a position in your chapter is not only nice for your chapter but is a big opportunity for you. Participate in who becomes a member by serving on the Membership Committee or being a Visitor Host. Strengthen your chapter by handpicking and inviting guests yourself. Get out of your comfort zone. You'll be investing in your personal development as well as your chapter. Ask what positions are available or if anyone needs help.

Give your expertise.
Do you have some great ideas for marketing the chapter, or could your business help the chapter with their advertising needs? Or maybe your business has lots of promotional products, and you'd like to donate some useful items to give to visitors. Do you have ideas that could help your Power Team grow, or hold more productive meetings? Maybe you want to offer your chapter members a special discount for using your services.  These are just a few examples; give it some thought, and I'm sure you can come up with many more!

Invite a visitor.
Do you have clients that you think could use BNI as part of their marketing program? Has a new business recently moved into your building or close to your location? If you're stuck for ideas on how to invite people to a BNI meeting, ask other members how they've been successful, or schedule some time with your Mentor.  Visitors can turn into members and as your chapter grows, more referrals are passed, more business is done. Even if that visitor isn't interested in joining, they may find members they want to do business with. This is good, too!

It may take a little effort to "give" to your BNI chapter, but it is well worth it.  Making that effort can help you give -- and receive -- better, more educated referrals.  So after all, givers do gain!

I'm new to this position with our chapter, but I've got a year's worth of experience with BNI now, and can also draw on plenty of life experience in my new role as Mentor.  In addition, it's a fact that we, as chapter members, are all mentors to each other when we schedule 1-2-1's to educate each other about our businesses and how to give good referrals.

In our regular lives, we are all mentors to our children, family, and friends, each time we show them something we know, that they may not know.  We are mentors sometimes by just listening and not talking.  Mentoring occurs when you truly care about helping another person.  Giving direction, advice, or a shoulder to lean on.  Showing they don't have to go at it alone is a practical part of mentoring to anyone in our lives.  This last one has to come from the heart.  Heart and character shine brighter than you realize in our day to day activities.

I, myself, enjoyed great mentoring from Dr. Dee Telting and from Cary Prater during my first year in BNI.  But a large part of my learning came from my interactions with our BNI members.  Some I have been privileged to meet and start new relationships with, some I knew before BNI and have become reacquainted with.  Some I have developed friendships with that will last a long time.  This last year for me has been terrific, in fact, in that I met a great group of business people who have the same desire, not only to generate referrals and business, but to develop business and personal friendships that enrich our lives.

I will be working to get up to speed on the Mentor position with our chapter by calling on past Mentors, and Mentors from other chapters, if I can't find the answers our members need.  And I look forward to using my new-found knowledge and leadership position to help new members enjoy the same great first year of experience in BNI that I had.  One final thought:  It's SPRING finally, so let's SPRING FORWARD!

Addy-award winning graphic designer Chris Jarratt figured out at a very early age that he wanted to work for himself.  At age 14, to be exact, when he set up a baseball card stand inside his grandmother's clothing store.  That desire to establish his own identity has translated well to his graphic design business, Jarratt Design, where Chris' focus is on helping businesses establish, and market, their own recognizable brand.

A member of Business Power Network for a year and a half, Chris says "Not only does BPN provide me with a great group of business professionals to share business with, it is a great motivating tool to see over 30+ other business men and women working hard to achieve their goals using the power of network marketing."  Over 60% of Jarratt Design's customers last year were a direct result of being a member!

After graduating from Drury in 2002, Chris got his feet wet as a graphic designer and marketing rep for Whitaker Publishing (417 Magazine).  But that desire to be his own boss led him to start Jarratt Design as a full-service ad agency in 2004.  His design work has won numerous awards, including 12 Springfield Addys -- one for the BPN logo at the head of this newsletter!

Chris' best client is someone starting a new business, or someone interested in re-branding their existing business, so business owners and marketing managers make his best referrals.  Chris would love to see a photographer, a printer, and an event coordinator join our chapter.

Chris is proud to call his grandmother his own personal hero, as she showed him how to work hard, run a business, and taught him the values he has today.  Values that all of us in BPN have come to appreciate, so let's all work hard to refer Chris to those businesses he can help with "A New Brand Idea"!
