A Word From The President
Welcome to the first issue of Business Power Network's monthly newsletter, another tool our chapter provides to help both members and visitors get the most out of BNI. A truly dynamic and growing chapter, Business Power Network is consistently ranked as one of the strongest chapters in the region, passing over 400 referrals within the chapter and generating over $2.1 million in sales, in just the last 3 months alone!
During my time as President, I have been very fortunate to have overseen tremendous growth in our membership, which has almost doubled in size in less than one year. Of course I can't claim sole responsibility for our growth -- we've had outstanding leadership the past couple of years, which laid the groundwork for our current success. Our members always work hard at bringing visitors to our meetings, and visitors are the lifeblood of any chapter's growth. Finally, at the base of our expansion is the BNI system itself, rewarding those who join our chapter with the means to grow their businesses to unlimited proportions. Again, welcome, thank you for reading, and we hope to see you at a Business Power Network meeting soon!

Our Education Coordinator Says...
BNI gives us tools to help us review our potential members, to be sure they are a good fit for our chapter, and our chapter is a good fit for them. Try asking these questions of someone who is seriously considering adding BNI to their marketing plan. 1. How long have you been in business? BNI recommends a potential member be in business for at least a year. Some chapters welcome start-up professionals, while other chapters are looking for experienced people with established contacts. 2. Do you attend networking events? We are looking for outgoing individuals who are already networking and marketing themselves. It is hard to be a good source of referrals for others when you get minimum exposure to people. 3. Are you willing to introduce your clients and friends to the chapter members? BNI is a proactive way of marketing, not reactive. Rather than catching a referral falling from a tree, we are looking for people who will get out and farm some referrals! 4. Are you prepared to handle a 20% growth in your business? This is a great question because it creates excitement, but it also brings up the reality many members aren't ready for: growing pains. 5. Do you interact with 25 people a week? We would prefer to invite potential members who are meeting and having conversations with new people every week. This greatly improves their chances of meeting referrals for members of the group. 6. Do you abide by a code of ethics? This is obviously important to the integrity of their business, but also to the chapter. If I am going to open up my best clients to you, I need to know how you will answer this question. 7. Are you willing to change vendors? As they build trust with members in the group they should be willing to do business with the chapter members when appropriate. 8. Are you willing to invite your vendors to BNI meetings? (Especially those whose positions in the chapter are up for grabs.) If a member likes their vendors, please bring them in and show them off to all of us. Maybe we have some business for them, too! 9. Do you attend regular training, continuing education or professional development classes? We want an individual who is willing to learn and grow professionally and personally. That is a lot of what BNI is about. 10. Are you willing to have a fun time and help make money for other people, who in turn agree to help you make money? If they say no to this, maybe they are not ready for BNI, especially not a chapter as fun and dynamic as BUSINESS POWER NETWORK!

Deep Thoughts From The Mentor

Welcome to the Mentor section of our BPN newsletter! As a founding member of this chapter, I am so proud to see how we have changed and grown. Since our inception, I have been the Visitor Host, and the Chapter President, and am currently an area Ambassador, but my role as the chapter Mentor is my favorite.
What does a BNI Chapter Mentor do? The role of the Mentor is to orient and educate new chapter members on how BNI can help build their businesses by referral! If you think of each BNI chapter as a company (not a club) then we are all owners/workers of the company (Business Power Network). Once a new member (owner/worker) joins our chapter (company), then it is the Mentor's role to help orient and educate the new member in how their membership (owner/worker role) works. But... "It takes a village to raise a chapter member". It's really the responsibility of all the members of the chapter to help "raise" a good chapter member. The Mentor will guide, coach and educate the new and existing members in BNI policies, procedures and systems, but we all need to "model" the behaviors that lead to success in BNI.
BNI is a fun but structured systematic approach to building a referral business. Think of each chapter as part of a franchise with a "turn key" system in place. McDonalds would never allow a new employee to start work without learning their systems. Well, BNI is the same way -- the chapter Mentor and the Education Coordinator make up the training department. That's why all new members are required to meet with the chapter Mentor once they are inducted into the chapter for the first month or so of membership.
Is the chapter Mentor just for new members? You're in luck! The chapter Mentor can help new or existing members in the chapter at anytime. So, no one can hide from my "deep thoughts"! Well, that's a little about the role of the chapter Mentor. If you are a new or somewhat new member of our chapter, please get with me ASAP to begin your Mentor sessions. Remember... in BNI, success is in the systems!

For this month's newsletter, anyway! We would like to thank you for reading, and if you are a past guest of our chapter, thank you for attending. Please feel free to forward this newsletter on to any of your friends or associates who might be interested in learning more about how BNI, and our chapter in particular, can help businesses grow in ways that no other professional networking organization can match. That's it, then, until next month!

Cyndi Conyers,
ADT Security

With an estimated 2.1 million residential burglaries happening each year nationwide, and those numbers increasing rapidly, home and business security is big business. Just as security experts recommend a mix for effective security - good locks, a security system, lighting and so on - Cyndi Conyers, a Small Business Sales Representative with ADT Security Services, Inc., sees Business Power Network as a good part of her marketing mix.
Cyndi brings a strong business acumen to her profession, with a background in restaurant/
hotel management and a stint as the Food Service Director for Springfield Public Schools, not to mention a degree from MSU in Administration in 1998.
With a year invested in Business Power Network, Cyndi sees results from her BNI experience each and every day. "I have had the chance to sharpen my networking skills through this professional, but very enjoyable group."
"Business Power Network has provided me the opportunity to see what a positive impact networking can have, both personally and professionally," Cyndi said. "Since joining, my sales have increased by approximately 25%, which is just great!"
A good referral for Cyndi would be someone starting up a new business or someone purchasing a new home, and currently her best customers are bar/restaurant owners and convenience store owners. Three professions she would like to see join Business Power Network would be a credit card processing company, a heating and cooling service, and maybe even a water cooler company! Just as a good security system is good for business and personal peace of mind, a dynamic BNI chapter like Business Power Network provides Cyndi with a great network of professionals, actively passing referrals and giving her professional peace of mind. |
